The Alaska Millwright Training Center’s goals are to provide quality training that includes both classroom and hands-on shop lessons which ensure that our member’s are the best in their craft. We provide Millwright apprenticeship and journeyman skill upgrade coursework statewide. The AMTC is a part of the Fairbanks Carpenter Training Center, but we focus on millwright training tasks.

The Fairbanks Carpentry Joint Apprenticeship Committee Announces the opening, for application to the Carpentry and Millwright Apprenticeship programs. The application period will be open year round. Interested persons should apply in person at the Fairbanks Carpenter Training Center any Wednesday to receive an application.

Applicants living 50 miles or more outside of Fairbanks may mail a written request to the FCTC PO Box 71087 Fairbanks AK 99707 for an application to be sent to them.

The request should include the following information.

1. Print your name, address and phone number
2. Write a statement requesting that an application be sent to you.
3. Print your name, then sign and date the letter (please print clearly)

Alaska Millwright Training Center

The employment and training of apprentices during their apprenticeship shall be without discrimination because of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex.

• 18 Years old.
• A High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.
• Must have been a resident of Alaska for at least (12) Consecutive months prior to application.
• Shall possess the basic aptitudes for acquiring the skills needed for the occupation.
• Shall be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the trade without endangering themselves or fellow workers.

The Minimum Qualifications to Apply to the Millwright Apprenticeship are Completed Applications: A completed application must be returned within 60 days of the date of the application

Interviews: Interviews take place Quarterly. (The end of February, May August and November) A time and date for an interview will be assigned to each applicant. You will usually be contacted by certified mail (We may contact you via phone) of the date for the interview. Interview will last about 15 minutes.

Training: If you are accepted into the Apprenticeship program you will be required to attend your first year of training at the Alaska Millwright Training Center in Soldotna lasting approximately (4)weeks.

• Classes are held Monday through Thursday 7:00am--4:30 pm.
• Students are not paid while in class.
• Students will be required to bring work clothing including gloves, steel-toed work boots.

Job placement: Upon completion of a four-weeks of training. Students will be placed to work as an "Apprentice Millwright", with various union construction companies in Alaska. Starting wages are around $19 per hour. For every 500 hours that an apprentice works. They will receive a 5% pay increase.

Schooling/OJT Requirements: During in the next 4 years, apprentices will continue to come to class during the winter months for training, lasting approximately 7 weeks each year, then returning to work, when the work is available. Apprentices must complete the four years of schooling (1080 hours total) and work between 6000 to 8000 hours on the job to complete the apprenticeship program and received their journeyman certificate. It normally takes about five (5) years to complete the program.

Millwright Journeyman Upgrade and Skill Advancement Training: Due to the nature of our trade and the increased pace of today’s technology, training doesn’t stop when you graduate. All millwrights must successfully complete a minimum of 16 hours of refresher training per year and must maintain their Millwright Qualification to insure that our employers are getting the best qualified employees. All apprenticeship coursework is open for journeypersons to attend, and we offer over 26 different subjects as stand alone journeyman skill refresher classes in topics covering everything from Safety issues to Steam Turbines.
